Relā in Review – 2019

Wow-I’m looking back on 2019 and to sum up in one word: exciting!

Part of the 2019 NxGen Cohort

In late January, the fifth year of NxGen began with seventeen young professionals from OhioHealth, JobsOhio, AEP, Safelite, HALT Violence, Southside Learning, Huntington National Bank and IMPACT Community Action.

Five members if the pilot ExecGen cohort

At the same time the pilot year of ExecGen started with seven participants. These community members brought on average 20 years supervisory experience to their cohort and they came from AEP, OhioHealth, Clarivoy and United Way Delaware County.

A public CARE to Lead session

2019 became a record-breaking year in community impact for Relā too. Our goal to provide at least $50,000 in professional development services to the nonprofit community was met and exceeded through the Relā Neighborhood Leadership Initiative (RNLI). You can see all the results on the RNLI 2019 report here!

I expanded our public and private workshops throughout the year resulting in a total of over 400 program participants. Over half of those participants came from area nonprofits-some bringing entire teams to better equip them for their mission!

The NxGen and ExecGen programs conducted four Community Impact Projects serving Family Mentor Foundation, Relā, Columbus Speech & Hearing and Kiwanis. If you click the links you and view each of their year-end videos detailing what they accomplished for those nonprofits and what they learned in the program.

The first SLAPcast recording with a little help from Shannon’s dog, Mia.

It started as a joke when we switched around the letters of our four values: Love, Action, Service, Passion-LASP to Service, Love, Action, Passion-SLAP. One of my board members laughed and said, “We should start a podcast and call it the SLAPcast!” And the rest is history. With guests like Jon Acuff, Shelene Bryan plus many local favorites, the SLAPcast is becoming one of the most engaging and fun leadership podcasts out there.

Jon Acuff at Leadership forum 2019

Annual events are always both fun and exhausting and this year was no different. In May, Leadership Forum: Leading Change included local favorites Perry Maughmer, Dr. Iris Cooper and Chris McAlister as well as nationally known author and speaker, Jon Acuff. A packed and sold out house means we need a bigger venue in 2020!

IMPACT Columbus 2019 Speaker Lineup

Then IMPACT Columbus in October gave way to a Columbus-specific focus with community leaders Sandy Doyle-Ahern, Michael Corey, Jamie Richardson and Christy Angel. It was an inspiring and motivating morning!

As we look forward to 2020, we are so humbled and grateful for the program participants, event attendees, listeners to the podcast, readers of our emails and community partners. The work we are privileged to do-to awaken the best in people-is just that: a privilege. And all of you make it possible.

Happy New Year!
